Chapter 6 - From the Morada
to the Kingdom Hall

The chapter places Shonnie and her family members in recent history. The Americans who took over New Mexico considered Hispanos an unfortunate race. The Catholic penitentes, notorious cultural rebels, hold private rites in their moradas. Overcoming racial tensions, New Mexico and Culebra pass through the 20th century. Protestants arrive, and later the Witnesses. The Medinas help to build the local Kingdom Hall.
